The ToolBox

  • 1. Laying the Foundation: Building Self-Value and Self-Worth

Teenage girls everywhere face pressures that can impact their self-esteem and sense of self-worth. For Black girls, these pressures are often intensified by systemic racism, colorism, and narrow beauty standards, can make them more vulnerable to unhealthy relationships. At the BBBG Project, we intentionally address these realities — empowering Black girls to recognize their worth, celebrate their individuality, and foster a positive self-image. And while our work is centered on the experiences of Black girls, our commitment to building confidence, resilience, and healthy relationship skills extends to every girl who takes part in our program.

  • 2. Embracing Identity: Loving the Skin They’re In

Once a sense of self-worth is established, we guide girls in embracing their whole selves—both inside and out. This includes celebrating their celebrating their diverse beauty—ethnicity, features, and shades of beauty, as well as recognizing their character, talents, skills, and temperament. By helping them understand that their individuality is a blend of who they are inside and out, we teach them to value what makes them different and unique. Through this process, they learn to take pride in every aspect of who they are, fostering confidence and self-acceptance.

  • 3. Building Strength: Resilience, Self-Respect, and Advocacy

With a solid foundation of self-worth and pride in their identity, we equip teenage girls and young women with the tools to navigate life’s challenges. Through resilience training, they learn to adapt to change, recover from setbacks, and thrive in adversity. Lessons in self-respect, advocacy, and boundary-setting empower them to stand firm in their values, prioritize their well-being, and confidently use their voice. These skills are essential for every girl to thrive in school, relationships, and life, and we intentionally uplift Black girls who face unique challenges.

  • 4. Creating Connections: Healthy Relationships

With a strong foundation of self-worth, identity, and resilience, girls are ready to learn how to build and sustain healthy relationships. Through this pillar, we help them identify the key attributes of strong connections—trust, respect, communication, and honesty—and recognize early warning signs of unhealthy dynamics. Through practical tools, mentorship, and a supportive community, girls gain the confidence to form meaningful relationships grounded in mutual care, honesty, and respect.

  • 5. Building Support: Circles of Trust, Mental, and Physical Wellness

Today’s girls face growing pressures that can leave them feeling isolated or unsure where to turn for help. Through this pillar, we emphasize the importance of building trusted circles — friends, mentors, and adults who uplift, encourage, and hold them accountable. We also teach girls to prioritize their mental, emotional, and physical wellness through self-care, stress management, and honoring their bodies as sacred. By understanding the connection between mind, body, and spirit, they learn that strength grows through support — and that strong girls build strong circles.

  • OUTCOME

Through these five pillars, girls grow into confident, resilient, and well-supported young women who build strong relationships, foster wellness, and inspire positive change in their families, schools, and communities.
