Our Story

The Building Beautiful Black Girls Project was born out of my personal and family experience with domestic violence. After witnessing the devastating and traumatic effects it had on my family, and seeing the broader impact it can have on families, communities, and society, I knew I could not stay silent. Those experiences planted in me a deep commitment to help girls gain the knowledge, confidence, practical life skills, and supportive relationships they need to make safe decisions, build healthy relationships, and protect themselves from harm.

In 2021, I began mentoring and coaching girls in my extended family, their friends, and girls in my neighborhood. What started through simple conversations and meaningful activities around self-worth, healthy relationships, decision-making, and personal safety began to grow into something much bigger.

As the need became clearer, the work expanded. BBBG began growing through partnerships with schools, after-school programs, youth organizations, public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and community leaders. In 2025, I formally incorporated the organization, and later that year BBBG received federal 501(c)(3) status.

Since those grassroots beginnings, BBBG has reached more than 500 girls throughout the Greater Kansas City area through interactive workshops, multi-session programs, mentoring, coaching, and prevention education. The work has also expanded to engage parents, caring adults, educators, therapists, community leaders, and partner organizations in strengthening protective factors, supporting mental well-being, promoting healthy relationships, and helping prevent cycles of abuse.

At the heart of it all is a simple belief: Every girl’s life is valuable.
